Saturday, Spring Strawberries, Buttered Toast and My Week in Photos

DSC_7724

Wouter, who is Dutch, introduced me to this style of eating small, sweet strawberries on toasted bread with butter.

Not really a recipe, here is what you do to for the best Saturday, May 17th,  breakfast ever…..

1. Wash 1 pint of small, local, sweet strawberries under cool running water. Remove caps & put into a bowl, cutting larger berries in half. Sprinkle berries with a bit of turbinado/raw sugar. Crush a few berries with a fork. Let sit while you make toast.

2. Slather toasted bread with softened butter, top with berries & another light dusting of sugar. This simple way of eating berries allows them to retain their flavor without being overwhelmed by other ingredients. It is just magical. Thanks Wouter.

  1. Strawberries? I’m jealous. We barely have asparagus yet; our winter was devastating, and spring is really late. On the positive side, I may possibly have ramps on my property, if I can find them. A delayed Happy Mother’s Day.

    1. I would love to have some ramps! I was in Chicago at Eataly recently and they were selling them at a very steep city price!
We have had a fantastic berry crop so far. Thanks for stopping by. T

  2. Hi Teresa! Looks like a wonderful week full of strawberries. Those sugared ones on toast look fab! Prop shopping had me green with envy and I loved the love corn picture – those hands…

    1. Thanks Selma, I was getting tickled laughing about your liking the hands…we were goofing around and I was the “so called hand model” and I said how much fun it would be if my fingers had tatoos, then someone else said yeah, like love and hate like prison tats…and on and on until the Sharpie marker came out and viola! “Love Corn”…lots of fun that day on set.

  3. Hi Teresa, the strawberries look so scrumptious with toasted and buttered bread! Definitely going to try those at home for some simple yet fancy breakfast tomorrow, just to make the Monday morning doesn’t feel so bleak. Thank you for posting and sharing this simple food.

  4. What an excellent idea – strawberries on toast!! Looks delicious, as does your Mother’s day breakfast 🙂 It’s dinner time here but I’m hungry for breakfast now..

  5. What a brilliant idea Teresa, I’ve never tried strawberries on toast, yours certainly looks appetizing! Enjoy this beautiful weather and the warm summer days ahead!

    1. Louisa, Trini, Loretta and Gerlinde, thanks so much for your nice comments. I hope y’all treat yourselves to strawberries on buttered toast with raw sugar very soon. You will love it I am sure. A real simple treat.

  6. This is living proof that the simple things in life are the glorious ones. The small sweet berries on that toast makes me want to run to the store. I’ve been craving buttered toast all week (cause I’m not eating bread) and when I am eating bread again, I know how I’m doing it.

    1. So true…simple is the best…but Angela you could do this same thing using gluten free bread or even crackers warmed in the oven. I know this is not paleo, but we gotta have a little fun? Oui?

  7. this reminded me of my friend Marcelle who told me about it nd learned it from her Belgian grandmother; except in Belgium they used the same method on baguette!

    1. Yes yes, on a baguette is how Wouter said they would eat it in Amsterdam, but I did not have one so I used a good multi-wheat bread with lots of body instead. We bought a baguette the next day and had it that way as well and oh what a delight. Hope you are well and thanks for stopping by.

  8. Hi Teresa,

The Gas Lamp is a favorite stop of mine when visiting Nashville. It’s in a fun location, too, what with all the big box stores surrounding its little nook. I’m glad you found the props you needed.

Have you tried The Yellow Porch Restaurant that’s up the street and across Woodmont?

Lovely images. Was a pleasure to share your week.

    Best,
    Emily Grace

    1. Yes Emily to The Yellow Porch. I eat lunch from there often while on photo shoots. It is one of the studios in Nashville’s favorites. Great to hear from you. T

  9. Oh my the strawberries on toast look and sound superb Teresa – sometimes we need to re think don’t we, to think simple. And I ‘m loving your photos from your week, an eclectic mix what with spoons and stop war signs 🙂
